What Are KS1 SATs Papers?
KS1 SATs papers are part of the National Curriculum Tests for Key Stage 1. They are often called SATs tests, SATs exams, or simply SATs papers. Traditionally, pupils take tests in Reading, Mathematics, and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (SPaG). Writing is assessed by teachers rather than through a formal test.
KS1 SATs Papers: SATs is actually an informal name for the government’s National Curriculum Tests. The SATs name has likely been adopted from American tests which are short for Standard Attainment Tests. Currently there are tests for Mathematics, Reading and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (sometimes referred to as SPAG – Spelling Punctuation and Grammar). Writing is assessed by teachers – there is no formal test.
SATs can also be called ‘SATs papers‘, ‘SATs exams‘ or ‘SATs tests‘ or their formal name ‘National Curriculum Tests‘.
Are KS1 SATs Still Used?
Yes – even though the government announced plans to phase them out, many schools continue to use KS1 SATs papers for internal assessment. They are typically taken in May during Year 2.

How Are KS1 SATs Results Reported?
Results are usually reported as Working Towards the Expected Standard, Working at the Expected Standard, or Working at Greater Depth. Some schools also provide scaled scores for a more detailed view of attainment.
Preparing for KS1 SATs
