FREE SAMPLE PAPER

Instructions

  • You have 20 minutes to answer 20 questions. The timer starts when you press Start.
  • A grown-up can read the questions aloud. That’s fine at this age.
  • Each question has four answers: A, B, C and D. Only one is right. Tap or click your answer.
  • There are five sections of four questions. In each section the questions start easier and get harder.
  • If you get stuck, move on and come back at the end. Use the flag to remember which ones to check.
  • No calculator. Have some paper and a pencil ready for working out.

For parents

Sit with your child somewhere quiet. You can read the questions aloud, but let your child choose the answers. If the 20 minutes run out, you can see the score straight away or let your child finish the rest untimed – you’ll see both scores. At this age it’s fine to pause or to finish untimed.

At the end you’ll see the score and how each section went. Add your email to get the full report: every question missed, what the chosen answer usually means, and a tip for next time.

Progress is saved in this browser, so closing the page by accident won’t lose the answers (the timer keeps running).

About this free 7+ maths test

This is Paper 1 from the PrimaryTools 7+ maths papers, set up to do online with an instant score. It’s written for children in Year 2 preparing for 7+ entry to independent schools, and it sticks to the Year 2 national curriculum, so it also works as a general check-up at the end of Key Stage 1.

There are 20 multiple-choice questions in five sections of four. Each section starts with an easier question and gets harder, so a child who gets stuck can move on. This is the warm-up paper: most children who are ready for 7+ practice should score well, and it shows clearly which topics need work.

Number and place valueTens and ones, odd and even, reading numbers in words, number patterns.
Adding and subtractingMental sums, number bonds to 20, missing-number boxes, adding two-digit numbers.
Multiplying, dividing and fractionsThe 2, 5 and 10 times tables, sharing equally, doubling and halving, simple fractions of shapes.
Money, time and measuresTelling the time, giving change from £1, estimating lengths, comparing measures.
Shape, data and problems2-D shapes, tally charts, bar charts, quarter turns and compass directions.

Using the result

  • 18–20: secure at this level – move on to harder papers.
  • 14–17: a good start – go through the questions missed together.
  • 10–13: getting there – practise the weakest section before the next paper.
  • Below 10: some foundations need work – try the topics out loud, with real coins, clocks and objects, before timed practice.

The section scores matter more than the total: a low section shows exactly what to practise. The free emailed report shows the worked answer for every question missed, what the chosen wrong answer usually means, and a tip for next time.

How does this compare with a real 7+ test?

7+ assessments vary from school to school. Many are done on paper, some one-to-one with a teacher, and some schools use short online tests. Most include mental maths, number, simple problems and reasoning at a Year 2 level or a little above. Check each school’s website for its own format.

This test is deliberately short – about half the length of a typical 7+ maths paper – because six- and seven-year-olds concentrate best in short bursts. The full PrimaryTools packs are printable PDF papers, so children also practise on paper.

Questions parents ask

Is the 7+ maths test really free?

Yes. The test, the score and the emailed report are all free. You only need to give an email address if you want the full report.

What age is it for?

Children in Year 2 (age 6–7), especially those preparing for 7+ entry. Confident Year 1 children and Year 3 children who want a quick check can try it too.

How long does it take?

20 minutes for 20 questions. If time runs out you can see the score straight away or finish the rest untimed – both scores are shown.

Can my child do it on a tablet or phone?

Yes. It works on tablets, phones and computers. A tablet or computer is easiest because the pictures are bigger. Have paper and a pencil ready for working out.

Can I read the questions to my child?

Yes. At this age it’s fine to read the questions aloud – just let your child choose the answers.

What’s in the emailed report?

The score for each section, every question missed with the worked answer, what the chosen wrong answer usually means, and a tip for next time.
