Instructions

  • You have 30 minutes to answer 25 questions. The timer starts when you press Start.
  • If time runs out, you can choose to finish the rest without the timer. The score at 30 minutes is kept and shown separately.
  • There are five blocks of five questions. In each block the questions start easier and get harder.
  • If you get stuck near the end of a block, move on – the next block starts with an easier question. Flag it and come back if you have time.
  • Each question has five answers, A to E. Only one is correct.
  • No calculator. Have paper and a pencil ready for working out.

For parents

Sit somewhere quiet and let your child work without help. When the 30 minutes are up, your child can see the score straight away or finish the rest untimed – you’ll see both scores.

At the end you’ll see the score and how each topic went. Add your email to get the full report: every question missed, the likely mistake behind each wrong answer, and a tip for next time.

Progress is saved in this browser, so closing the page by accident won’t lose the answers (the timer keeps running).

About this free 11+ maths test

This is Paper 1 from the PrimaryTools 11+ maths papers, set up to do online with an instant score. It’s written for children in Year 5 and Year 6 preparing for grammar school or independent school entry, and it covers the upper Key Stage 2 maths that 11+ tests are built on.

There are 25 multiple-choice questions in five blocks of five, with 30 minutes on the clock and no calculator. Each block starts with an easier question and gets harder, so a child who gets stuck can move on. This is the warm-up paper: it shows quickly which topics are secure and which need work.

Number and place valueRounding, powers, factors and multiples, large numbers, ordering decimals, fractions and percentages.
CalculationWritten methods for the four operations, estimating, remainders in context, order of operations.
Fractions, decimals and percentagesAdding fractions, percentages of amounts, equivalent values, multi-step fraction problems, decimals.
Ratio, proportion and algebraFormulae, recipes and scaling, simple equations, sequences and the nth term, map scales.
Shape, measures and statisticsVolume, angles, coordinates and translations, timetables, converting units.

Using the result

  • 22–25: secure at warm-up level – move on to the standard papers.
  • 18–21: a good start – read the notes for the questions missed, then try the next paper.
  • 12–17: getting there – practise the weakest block before the next paper.
  • Below 12: some foundations need work – practise the weakest topics without a timer first.

The topic scores matter more than the total: a low block shows exactly what to practise. If time ran out, compare the 30-minute score with the extra-time score – a big gap means pace is the thing to work on. The free emailed report shows the worked answer for every question missed, the likely mistake behind each wrong answer, and a tip for next time.

How does this compare with the real 11+?

11+ tests vary by area and school. Many grammar school tests are multiple-choice on paper with a separate answer sheet, while some independent schools use online tests such as the ISEB Common Pre-Test. Most maths sections are timed tightly, so speed matters as well as accuracy. Check the exact format with each school or local authority.

This test is about half the length of a typical 11+ maths paper but keeps a similar pace. The full PrimaryTools packs are printable PDF papers, so children practise on paper too.
