What’s inside

13 English papers, 25 multiple-choice questions each (A–E): 30 minutes, or 35 minutes for the longer stretch and elite texts
Thirteen original texts that grow longer and richer level by level: adventure, mystery, historical and science-fiction stories, a story in Victorian style, non-fiction, a discussion, an argument and a poem
Comprehension in four sections: finding information · words in context · inference · the writer’s choices – with the most questions on inference, as in the real tests
Spelling, punctuation and grammar in the style of GL and other 11+ tests
An optional 15-minute writing task in every paper, with a planning box, a mark scheme and a model answer – ideal for schools and areas (such as Essex) that test writing

The answer guides quote the words in the text that prove each answer.

Why short papers?

Full 11+ papers can take an hour or more, and tired children stop trying. Our papers are about half the length of a typical 11+ paper but keep the real pace, so practice fits into a busy week and actually gets done.

An answer guide for every paper

Page 1 is a quick guide: the answer key, the scores by section and what the score means – everything you need to mark the paper in a few minutes
Then every question explained, step by step
“If you chose…” – a note on every wrong option, explaining the mistake that usually leads to it
A “next time” tip for every question

Four levels, from warm-up to elite

Papers 2–3: warm-up
Papers 4–8: standard – the level of a typical 11+ test
Papers 9–11: stretch – harder than a typical test
Papers 12–14: elite – for the most selective grammar and independent schools

Every paper is split into the same short sections, and the questions get harder within each section – so a child who gets stuck can move on to an easier question. Paper 1 is free to download from our practice papers page, so you can try the format first.

Progress tracker included

A printable PDF tracker and an Excel version. Copy the section scores from each answer sheet and the tracker shows progress paper by paper, compares it with a suggested aim for each level and – in the Excel version – picks out the section to practise next.
